Bitcoin Drops Below $84K as $550M Liquidation Wave Hits Crypto Market
Forced selling of leveraged long positions dragged BTC toward $83,500 and pulled Ethereum, XRP and Solana down with it.

The Bitcoin price slipped under $84,000 on October 7 after a quick reversal set off a chain of forced position closures across crypto derivatives markets.
At the low of the move, BTC was down as much as 2.4% near $83,583. Ethereum lost about 3.9% and traded close to $2,594, while XRP and Solana also gave up ground as the selling broadened.
Leverage made the drop sharper. Roughly $550 million worth of crypto positions were liquidated during the prior 24 hours.
Long Positions Take the Biggest Hit
Rather than a shift in Bitcoin’s underlying story, the decline looks tied mainly to crowded bullish bets that had grown too large.
Most of the liquidated positions were longs — traders using borrowed funds to wager on further gains. As BTC dipped, exchanges closed those positions automatically.
Those automatic closures add more sell orders to an already falling market, which can turn a modest pullback into a faster slide than ordinary spot selling would cause.
Altcoins often feel this kind of flush more than Bitcoin does, since thinner liquidity and higher volatility magnify the impact of forced selling. The pullback comes shortly after our coverage of the Bitcoin rally near $87K.
Ethereum, XRP and Solana Follow Bitcoin Lower
BTC was not falling alone.
Ethereum dropped toward the middle of the $2,500 range, and both XRP and Solana registered meaningful losses during the same window.
The matching moves show that, in a sudden risk-off episode, the largest altcoins still trade closely in step with Bitcoin. For more context, read our Solana market outlook and Ethereum market outlook.
Broader Risk Sentiment Turns More Cautious
The selloff also lined up with a weaker mood across global markets.
Oil moved up, Treasury yields stayed high and investors grew more careful ahead of the release of Federal Reserve meeting minutes.
Elevated yields and a firmer dollar tend to weigh on speculative assets, because returns on low-risk holdings become comparatively more appealing.
Rising yields do not guarantee a crypto decline, but tighter financial conditions leave heavily leveraged markets more exposed to sudden drops.
Bitcoin Traders Watch $83K Support
The near-term level in focus sits around $83,000.
Should BTC stay above that zone while leverage resets, prices could find their footing once the liquidation pressure eases.
A decisive move below $83,000, on the other hand, would increase the chance of a deeper pullback toward the high-$70,000s.
At this stage, the drop reads more like a forced cleanup of leverage than a confirmed long-term change in trend.
