Ethereum Outperformed Bitcoin in Q3, but ETF Outflows and Thin Liquidity Put Q4 in Focus

ETH gained roughly 70.9% in Q3, but ETF outflows, thin liquidity and flat price action near $2,700 complicate the start of Q4.

Ethereum outpaces Bitcoin in Q3 as ETF outflows and $2,700 resistance shape the Q4 outlook

Ethereum entered Q4 with one of the strongest performances among major cryptocurrencies, but the start of the quarter has been more complicated.

ETH gained roughly 70.9% in Q3, comfortably ahead of Bitcoin’s 42.6% to 43% rise over the same period. That made Ethereum one of the standout large-cap assets of the quarter and marked a sharp recovery after a weak first half of the year.

However, the picture has changed in recent days. US spot Ethereum ETFs recorded around $117.8 million in net outflows over three trading days, ending a seven-day inflow streak that had brought in more than $850 million.

At the same time, the Ethereum price has flattened near $2,700, while Bitcoin has continued to edge higher.

Ethereum ETF Outflows End a Strong Inflow Streak

The most immediate pressure on ETH has come from US spot Ethereum ETFs.

After seven consecutive sessions of inflows, investors turned into net sellers at the end of September and start of October. The three-day outflow total of about $118 million is not especially large compared with previous periods of selling, but it matters because ETF demand had been one of the main supports behind Ethereum’s recovery.

Fidelity’s Ethereum fund accounted for a large share of the recent outflows, while Grayscale funds were also responsible for much of the remaining selling. BlackRock’s ETHA, the largest Ethereum ETF, recorded no meaningful flows during part of the same period.

That shift matters because ETF buying has been a major source of demand.

Crypto fund holdings tracked by analysts have increased by more than 1 million ETH since July, lifting total holdings by roughly a quarter compared with earlier levels. If that buying resumes, it could help support prices. If redemptions continue, one of Ethereum’s most important demand drivers could weaken.

Ethereum Beat Bitcoin in Q3, but the Rally Needs Context

Ethereum’s Q3 performance was impressive, but it came after a much weaker first half.

ETH fell around 29% in Q1 and another 25% in Q2, while Bitcoin declined by roughly 22% and 14% in those same quarters.

That means Ethereum’s Q3 rally was partly a recovery from deeper losses rather than evidence that ETH has permanently taken the lead from Bitcoin.

Still, the relative strength is notable.

The wider crypto market also recovered during the quarter, with total market capitalization rising by an estimated $823 billion to around $2.84 trillion.

That figure reflects changes in token prices and circulating supply rather than $823 billion of fresh cash entering the market, but it still shows how broad the Q3 rebound was.

Ethereum simply benefited more than Bitcoin from that recovery.

Thin Ethereum Liquidity Could Make Q4 More Volatile

One of the biggest concerns for Ethereum heading into Q4 is market liquidity.

Recent exchange-liquidity research showed that ETH’s median order-book depth close to the market price has fallen significantly relative to Bitcoin.

Ethereum’s near-price liquidity is now estimated at roughly 35% to 45% of Bitcoin’s, compared with at least 60% a year earlier.

Within a narrow 0.2% band around the current price, ETH liquidity was estimated at around $13 million to $14 million.

That is still enough for normal retail trading, but thinner order books can create sharper price moves when large trades hit the market.

If buyers return aggressively, lower liquidity could help ETH move higher quickly.

The same works in reverse.

A wave of selling could move through available bids faster and create more slippage, increasing downside volatility.

This is why Ethereum’s Q4 performance may depend not only on demand, but also on whether market depth improves alongside it.

Long-Held ETH Is Moving, but Not Necessarily Being Sold

Another development attracting attention is activity from long-held Ethereum wallets.

On-chain data showed a sharp increase in the movement of older ETH, with age-consumed metrics reaching levels far above recent averages.

However, exchange balances did not rise significantly at the same time.

That is important.

When old coins move, it does not automatically mean investors are preparing to sell. In many cases, large transfers can reflect wallet reorganizations, custody changes or staking activity.

There has also been an increase in Ethereum validator exits, with staking withdrawal queues reaching a multi-month high following a security-related validator exit by MetaMask’s staking operation.

Even so, the number of ETH waiting to enter staking has remained higher than the amount waiting to leave.

That suggests the staking picture is not currently pointing to a broad rush for the exit.

Q4 Seasonality Looks Better on Average Than in Reality

Historical Q4 returns may look attractive at first glance.

Bitcoin has produced an average Q4 return of around 63%, while Ethereum’s average is closer to 19%.

But the median numbers tell a more cautious story.

Bitcoin’s median Q4 return is only around 6.6%, while Ethereum’s median sits near 12%.

The gap between average and median shows how much a few exceptional years can distort historical expectations.

Last year is also a useful reminder that Q4 strength is never guaranteed. Bitcoin fell roughly 23% in Q4 2025, while Ethereum declined by about 28%.

Seasonality can provide context, but it is not a reliable prediction by itself.

What Would Confirm Another Ethereum Recovery?

For Ethereum to strengthen its Q4 outlook, several things would help.

A return to consistent ETF inflows would be one of the clearest positive signals.

Another would be ETH reclaiming recent fund-holding highs while maintaining or improving liquidity across major exchanges.

Futures positioning remains relatively calm, with open interest rising only slightly and funding rates staying close to neutral. That suggests the market is not yet heavily leveraged in either direction.

Corporate buying also remains a supportive factor, with large institutional holders continuing to accumulate ETH.

For now, Ethereum begins Q4 with a mixed setup.

The asset has clear momentum from a strong Q3, but ETF outflows, flat price action and thinner liquidity mean the next leg higher is far from guaranteed.

The key question is whether demand returns strongly enough to absorb available supply without creating an unstable, low-liquidity rally.
