Altcoin Season Cools as Most Major Tokens Fall Behind Bitcoin
Fewer large altcoins are beating BTC, the Altcoin Season Index sits below its confirmation level and leverage remains elevated.

Talk of altcoin season has grown quieter. After a September in which many large tokens outpaced Bitcoin, BTC is once again proving more resilient than most of the market.
In the latest downturn, the median large-cap altcoin lost about 6.2%, while Bitcoin gave up around 3.4%.
Just 22 of 86 tracked major tokens did better than BTC over that stretch — a clear change in relative strength.
Altcoins Lose Their Recent Advantage
For much of September, altcoins beat Bitcoin, and many traders added exposure to riskier tokens as a result.
That edge has shrunk.
On a weekly basis, only about three in ten large altcoins recently beat Bitcoin. In each of the two weeks before, roughly seven in ten did.
That shift alone does not mark the end of the altcoin cycle.
Looking at 30 days instead of seven, 51 of the 86 tracked tokens were still ahead of BTC, so the longer view remains fairly balanced.
Leverage Is Becoming a Bigger Risk
A larger worry is how much borrowed money is still tied up in altcoin trades.
Futures positioning grew during the September run-up, and a good share of it has yet to unwind.
Ethereum illustrates the point.
During the 24-hour window in question, ETH liquidations came to about $234 million, ahead of roughly $179 million for Bitcoin.
Ethereum open interest, meanwhile, held close to $34 billion. For background on ETH’s recent path, see our Ethereum market outlook.
If those leveraged positions stay open, a further drop in prices could set off more forced selling.
Altcoin Season Index Remains Below Confirmation
The Altcoin Season Index tells a similar story.
It stood near 60, short of the 75 mark that many traders treat as confirmation of a true altcoin season.
In other words, altcoins have shown real relative strength, but participation has not been broad enough to qualify as a full cycle.
After the latest selloff, that gap matters more.
Bitcoin Could Decide the Next Move
BTC remains the market’s anchor.
Traders have pointed to around $81,000 as a key zone of buying interest, which makes it an important level for the wider market.
Losing that area while leverage stays high could expose altcoins to another wave of forced selling, extending the recent Bitcoin market selloff.
By contrast, fresh spot buying and a firmer Bitcoin move above roughly $85,500 could help rebuild confidence across risk assets.
Is Altcoin Season Over?
Calling an end to the altcoin cycle would be premature.
Plenty of large tokens are still ahead of Bitcoin over 30 days, though short-term strength has clearly narrowed.
Leverage is the bigger concern.
Should prices keep sliding while derivatives exposure stays high, liquidations could add to losses across altcoins.
At this point, the numbers describe a market losing steam rather than one where altcoin season has definitively ended.
